FontCard is a haxie that modifies the Font menu and the font panel in Carbon and Cocoa applications. It can add an icon that displays the format of a font next to the font menu item or font panel list, display the font name in the font face, group fonts into submenus, and add third party font collections to the font menu and font panel. Last but not least, it gives you the power of a professional font management utility for only US $17!

Features:

  • View the Font menu with each font displayed using its own typeface (WYSIWYG Font Menu);
  • View third party font collections (Insider Software's FontAgent Pro, LinoType's FontExplorerâ„¢ X, and Extensis' Suitcase Fusion) directly from the place you choose your font;
  • View the Font Panel with each font displayed using its own typeface (WYSIWYG Font Menu);
  • Instantly view the format of the font (TrueType, OpenType, PostScript, etc);
  • View all the styles the font offers right in the menu;
  • Reveal the font in the Finder from the menu;
  • View font collections in the Font menu;
  • View third party font collections in the Font panel;
  • Show previews of inactive fonts contained in third party font sets directly from the font menu;
  • Mark and reveal duplicate fonts;
  • Easy to configure as it comes in usual Preference Pane form, accessible through System Preferences.

New in version 1.5:

  • This is a free update for all registered users of FontCard.
  • This version regrettably drops support for Mac OS X 10.3.x.
  • Added support for font sets created in LinoType's FontExplorerâ„¢ X.
  • Added support for Extensis' Suitcase Fusion (12.x) font sets.
  • Added support to show the standard Cocoa font panel in WYSIWYG goodness. Third party font sets are also shown in the font panel. Take a gander at the read me for further details.
  • Fixed a problem with choosing fonts from the font menu not working in QuarkXPress 7.x on the Intel-based Macs (ICBMs).
  • Important Notice: We have not yet acquired a copy of Adobe CS3, so therefore we have not personally tested FontCard with the various applications that are included with Adobe Creative Suite 3. However, the worst that will happen is choosing a font from FontCard's menu won't do anything in Adobe CS3 applications.
  • Tried to add better logging for the daemon if something goes wrong when getting the preview of an inactive font.
  • No longer tries to re-activate a font that is part of a font set if you deactivate the font after viewing it and you have any kind of duplicate font handling enabled (Mark Dupes or Hide Dupes).
  • Now uses ImageIO instead of QuickTime. This means FontCard no longer links to QuickTime and no longer has to scan the various installed components. This is a good thing.
  • For some odd reason, all previous versions of FontCard has WYSIWYG fonts enabled even if it was disabled. This has been fixed.
  • Addressed a problem that prevented activation of inactive fonts in third party font sets when explicitly selected from a menu if the font manager is not running. FontCard now attempts to manually activate a font if a font manager does not answer the query.
  • Now correctly updates Mac OS X collections of a font is removed from a collection.
  • Fixed an issue in the installer that could cause it to install simultaneously while uninstalling when installing for all users.

New in version 1.3.3:

  • FontCard is now a Universal (Fat) binary compatible with the Intel-based Macs (ICBMs).
  • Added a "Unmatched Fonts" submenu for fonts that are available in the Applications real font menu but for which FontCard cannot find a font that matches the menu item name.
  • Added an Updater that automatically checks for updates at user-specified intervals.
  • Fixed a problem with FontCard not recognizing font menus in Japanese localized applications.
  • Updated for the sets created in FontAgent Pro 3.2 and later.
  • Hopefully addressed an issue with some fonts not appearing in Adobe applications. This does not apply to fonts installed in Adobe specific font folders.
  • Fixed a problem with QuarkXPress 6.x and 7.x that caused FC to select the wrong font if the correct font was listed after the generic font family in the real font menu. This was especaily a problem for Helvetica Neue fonts under QuarkXPress 7.0.

New in version 1.3.2:

  • Fixed a combinatorial speed hit when opening or scrolling a font menu with inactive fonts in it.
  • Fixed a crash when opening a popup menu if FontCard was not ready for a menu to open yet.
  • Fixed a problem that prevented inactive font previews from working if the name of the home folder differed in case (Bob vs. bob) from the name specified in NetInfo.
  • Addressed an issue that would cause the FontCard menu to appear in places it shouldn't, especially in the various palette menus of Adobe Illustrator CS.
  • Fixed a problem that would cause the All Fonts group to be replaced by the first font alphabetically if the first font also had a duplicate installed.
  • Fixed a delay that could occur when opening menus if calculating the contents of their submenus was compute intensive.
  • FontCard should now list FontAgent Pro sets that only contain other sets and do not contain any fonts themselves.
  • Addressed a problem that caused some incomplete font items in a FontAgent Pro sets to slow down inactive font displays.
  • The mark duplicate fonts option works again.
  • Fonts are now sorted in all font sets except for Recents and Favorites, which are sorted by use.
  • Fixed a problem in which the FontCard menu would be appended to the end of the font menu in some Cocoa applications.
  • Increase compatibility with Macromedia Fireworks.
  • Added support for Photoshop Elements (it is treated in the same manner as the regular Photoshop).
  • Improved support for applications that insist on supporting bitmap only fonts (like Aachen) even though Mac OS X has very poor support for bitmap fonts.
  • The Crash Catcher works correctly again and now catches crashes caused by corrupted name entries in a font.
  • Addressed a problem in QuarkXPress that would cause the font menu in the Usage dialog to be disabled if the font menu in the menu bar had been opened beforehand.

New in version 1.3.1:

  • Now saves Recently Used fonts even if "Show Font Book Collections" is not enabled.
  • Fixed an infinite loop when selecting a font in an Adobe application in Tiger.
  • Added support for Creature House (now Microsoft) Expressions 3.
  • Fixed issues with FontCard and Adobe CS2 applications.
  • Fixed a problem that caused the color profile output options menu to turn into an FC enhanced menu in Acrobat Pro
  • Now always makes own recent fonts menu instead of trying to use the system's. Mac OS X's recent fonts never worked.
  • Now sees FontAgent Pro font sets if they've been made available to all users on the computer.
  • Added German Localization by Martin G. Kaiser.

New in version 1.3:

  • Added support for FontAgent Pro sets.
  • Added support for displaying inactive fonts in FontAgent Pro sets.
  • Selecting an inactive font will automatically activate it and select it for you. However, activated fonts must be manually reselected in Adobe applications.
  • Appearance Manager Savvy.
  • Tiger Compatible.
  • No longer supports Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar version 10.2.x.
  • Removed some redundancy when getting information about a font. This results in a very small speed increase.
  • Now tries to use the file name of a font as the family name if the family name cannot be generated through other means.
  • Added support for the font menus in the Mail.app preferences. FC will also work with other cocoa Applications that generate their font menus in a similar way.
  • Now calls the main thread when determining whether or not to include OpenType fonts in the font menu. This ensures menus are populated on the main thread.
  • Caches the number of names a font has.
  • New installer.
  • Updated for APE 1.5.
  • Added Dutch translation by Dhr. Tom Klaver.
